At this point during the COVID-19 pandemic, many dental offices have begun to adapt to the current situation and resumed their day-to-day work. However, there are many open questions in terms of this paradigm shift that relate to such topics as infection control, sterilisation monitoring and provision of emergency care. At IDEM 2020, Dr Pallavi Patil from India presented an online lecture on the importance of choosing the right protection and on overall transitions in dentistry during the pandemic. In an interview with Dental Tribune International, Dr Patil shared her expert opinion on the topic.

TOKYO, Japan: A study conducted at a hospital in Tokyo has found that poor oral hygiene could lead to prolonged viral shedding in patients with COVID-19. In the study, it was observed that patients with inadequate oral health regimes returned positive results in polymerase chain reaction (PCR) tests for the virus long after their clinical recovery, leading the researchers to believe that oral hygiene could affect the accuracy of testing for the virus.

Curaden’s BOB App is an easy-to-use app that allows you to keep track of your patients’ interdental bleeding and provide them with a mouth map indicating which interdental brush to use for each interdental space. The app motivates patients to reduce and eliminate their BOB (bleeding on brushing) scores at home through daily interdental cleaning and come back for regular prevention-based check-ups. South Korean dentist Dr Yohan Shin has successfully introduced the app as a motivational tool to engage patients in their own oral health.

LONDON, UK: Though the COVID-19 pandemic is far from over, it has been going on long enough for certain lessons to have been gleaned from the way in which different countries have responded to it. This proposition forms the thrust of a recent British Dental Journal opinion article, which compares and contrasts measures implemented in the UK with those instituted in South Korea—two countries that have been affected by the spread of SARS-CoV-2 on vastly different scales.

LEIPZIG, Germany: In recent years, the dental industry’s approach to continuing education (CE) has often been focused on in-person learning opportunities at congresses, symposia and the like. This didactic avenue is, unfortunately, one of many areas of the dental profession to have been drastically affected by the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic. Typical of dentistry’s innovative spirit, many dental companies and institutions have quickly shifted to alternative methods of teaching, and dental professionals have responded with enthusiasm.

The use of pre-shaded zirconia with a highly translucent gradient brings more efficiency into the dental laboratory. Owing to the advanced properties of materials like KATANA Zirconia multilayered discs, true-to-life restorations can be created without any, or with only a thin vestibular layer of, veneering porcelain. This saves considerable time in the laboratory.

Periodontitis is pandemic in nature and distributed all over the world. The disease’s prevalence and burden on oral health in India is no different, and periodontitis shows no discrimination between race, sex, caste or creed. Many studies quote an incidence rate of greater than 30% among the global adult population. The numbers are staggering: more than 300 million people in India have periodontitis. If we consider gingivitis, the numbers are even more mind-boggling. Periodontitis remains the single largest reason for loss of teeth currently. Although many risk factors and predisposing factors are attributed to the aetiology of periodontitis, dental plaque is the predominant reason and the most easily modifiable risk factor to prevent periodontal disease.

WUHAN, China: As researchers continue their quest to better understand the SARS-CoV-2 virus, a new study has aimed at improving the detection of SARS-CoV-2 ribonucleic acid. By using oropharyngeal secretions instead of nasopharyngeal swabs (NPSs) for nucleic acid amplification tests (NAATs) for SARS-CoV-2, the researchers managed to reduce the number of false-negative results from testing of patients who had apparently recovered from the disease.

BRISBANE, Australia: Ensuring the formation of a solid soft-tissue seal at the dental abutment surface is crucial for protecting the underlying tissue from the microbial-rich oral environment. In recent years, nanotechnology has been increasingly applied in dentistry. Now, researchers from the University of Queensland have applied titania nanopores (TNPs) to the surface of titanium. The aim of the research is to modify dental implants with nanopores in order to enhance soft-tissue integration and wound healing.
