At this point during the COVID-19 pandemic, many dental offices have begun to adapt to the current situation and resumed their day-to-day work. However, there are many open questions in terms of this paradigm shift that relate to such topics as infection control, sterilisation monitoring and provision of emergency care. TOKYO, Japan: A study conducted at a hospital in Tokyo has found that poor oral hygiene could lead to prolonged viral shedding in patients with COVID-19. In the study, it was observed that patients with inadequate oral health regimes returned positive results in polymerase chain reaction (PCR) tests for the virus long after their clinical recovery, leading the researchers to believe that oral hygiene could affect the accuracy of testing for the virus.

Periodontitis is pandemic in nature and distributed all over the world. The disease’s prevalence and burden on oral health in India is no different, and periodontitis shows no discrimination between race, sex, caste or creed. Many studies quote an incidence rate of greater than 30% among the global adult population. The numbers are staggering: more than 300 million people in India have periodontitis. If we consider gingivitis, the numbers are even more mind-boggling. Periodontitis remains the single largest reason for loss of teeth currently. Although many risk factors and predisposing factors are attributed to the aetiology of periodontitis, dental plaque is the predominant reason and the most easily modifiable risk factor to prevent periodontal disease.

WUHAN, China: As researchers continue their quest to better understand the SARS-CoV-2 virus, a new study has aimed at improving the detection of SARS-CoV-2 ribonucleic acid. By using oropharyngeal secretions instead of nasopharyngeal swabs (NPSs) for nucleic acid amplification tests (NAATs) for SARS-CoV-2, the researchers managed to reduce the number of false-negative results from testing of patients who had apparently recovered from the disease.

In recent years, nanotechnology has been increasingly applied in dentistry. Now, researchers from the University of Queensland have applied titania nanopores (TNPs) to the surface of titanium.
