Singapore hosted largest dental show ever

LEIPZIG, Germany/SINGAPORE: There is no doubt that the International Dental Exhibition & Meeting 2008 was one of the biggest dental events that Singapore has ever seen. When the show closed its doors on Sunday afternoon, organisers were able to look back at three days of buzzing activity and plenty of new contacts with dental professionals from all around the Asia Pacific region.  

Singaporeans need more dental check-ups

LEIPZIG, Germany/SINGAPORE: People in Singapore need to be more aware of oral health benefits, a dental screening at IDEM 2008 has revealed. The screenings which were supported by the Singapore Dental Health Association and the company Johnson & Johnson took place at the Suntec shopping mall in early April and provided an overall of six hundred checks during the three day event.

NTI-TSS signs agreement with Singapore’s DMA

SINGAPORE: The US manufacturer NTI-TSS has signed an exclusive representative partnership agreement with Dental Agency Marketing (DMA), a sales and consultant company based in Singapore, during IDEM 2008. DMA will be marketing NTI’s FDA approved Tension Suppression System in the city state as well as neighbouring countries like Malaysia and Vietnam.

Interview with microbiologist John G. Thomas, USA

Prof. John G. Thomas has been a clinical microbiologist since 1969. He is currently working at the West Virginia University in Morgantown, USA, where he also holds the position of the Director of the Clincial Research Laboratory of Microbial Patholoy, focusing on the integration of dental, medical and environment diseases through four linked pathways: biofilms antibiotic resistance, clinical and financial outcomes, and global oral hygiene. Dental Tribune Group Editor Daniel Zimmermann was able to speak to him during the IDEM show in Singapore where he gave a lecture on “Managing biofilm for optimal oral health”.

Healthy gums through cheese and milk

LEIPZIG, Germany: A study from Japan has revealed that routine intake of dairy products may help promote periodontal health. The study analysed the periodontal health of 942 subjects and determined that those who regularly consumed milk, cheese or yogurt had a lower instance of gum disease.

Malaysia recognises aesthetics

PETALING JAHA: Members of all medical associations in Malaysia, including the Dental Council and the Association of Craniomaxillofacial Surgeons, have announced to draw up a proposal for the country’s Health Ministry to acknowledge medical and dental practitioners who undertake a new training programme as aesthetic specialists. The ministry is expected to look into the recommendations and set up a training module with a three-year training scheme soon.

Oral flu vaccine under development

LEIPZIG, Germany: Dentists may soon be able to vaccinate patients against the flu and other illnesses. Researcher Song Joo-Hye and her colleagues at the International Vaccine Institute (IVI) in Seoul have found that sublingual administration of an experimental flu vaccine is highly effective in protecting mice from influenza virus infection. When the flu vaccine was applied under the tongue, the animals developed robust immune responses in their lungs and were fully protected from the disease when later exposed to a more severe form of the influenza virus.

LEIPZIG, Germany: It was one of the worst single aircraft accidents in the history of aviation. In August 1985, Japanese Airlines Flight 123 coming from Haneda Tokyo International Airport, suddenly went out of control and crashed at Mt. Takamagahara in the Japanese Prefecture of Gunma after 32 minutes of irregular flight. Flight data revealed a fatigue failure of the aft pressure bulkhead, followed by a structural failure of the vertical fin. The tragedy took the lives of 520 of the 524 passengers and crew members aboard the flight.
